Desde la prehistoria el hombre a elegido este bellísimo pueblo para vivir, de tan antiguo como del año 1000 a E.C llegan los testimonios de que estaba habitada esta zona, el mismisimo Plinio el Viejo habla en su Historia Natural de la existencia del Portus Amanum o puerto de los amanos, y del Castrum Vardulies o castro de los várdulos. Este establecimiento indígena estaba poblado por un grupo tribal prerromano, los sámanos, de donde surge el nombre del valle de Sámano y el río. Se piensa que este pueblo poseía un nivel cultural alto como lo demuestra la escultura de bronce de 14 cm de altura llamada «Neptuno Cántabro», que posiblemente representó a una divinidad indígena que sostiene un delfín en una mano y en la otra posiblemente un tridente. Este grupo se dedicaba a la pesca, agricultura y ganadería, ya que el territorio era favorable para estas prácticas. Hoy más de 3000 años después sigue siendo un placer perderse por sus calles, tapear en sus bares y dejarse inundar por el ambiente, el mar y sus gentes, amables, generosas y felices de vivir en este bello puerto de mar, Castro Urdiales. ¡No dejeis de pasar!
