«No has ido a Cuba sino has paseado por los jardines del Hotel Nacional», al menos así ha sido siempre para nosotros, podemos haber visitado los cayos, Varadero, Santiago, Matanzas, Viñales o un largo etcetera de lugares increíbles en la isla pero al final siempre dedicamos un día a pasear por todos los rincones de este hermoso e histórico hotel, y siempre es uno de los recuerdos más bellos del viaje, creo que es más por todo lo que ha visto y vivido este lugar y lo que aún representa no solo para los Cubanos sino para todo el mundo que por su belleza y fastuosidad. Fue inaugurado la noche del 30 de diciembre de 1930, pero el lugar, ya tenía mucha historia, os doy solo tres detalles, a esta colina se la conocía como la «loma de Taganana«, que es el nombre de la cueva que existió bajo los cimientos del actual hotel, otro detalle; a esta zona también se la conoce como el «Monte Vedado», por que un decreto Español prohibió que en toda ella se abriesen caminos hacia la cercana playa, y una joya más de la historia es que estos hermosos jardines están completamente horadados por debajo dado que albergaron durante muchos años, la famosa Batería de Santa Clara, «Patrimonio de la Humanidad» desde 1982 por la UNESCO, y es que debido a los constantes ataques de corsarios, piratas y finalmente ingleses, se eligió este encumbrado lugar para instalar defensas, torreones y baterías de cañones entre los que aún se pueden visitar, el «Krupp» y el «Ordoñez» el cañón mas grande del mundo en su época. Además de todo ello la lista de celebridades que han pasado por este hotel, y los eventos históricos que ha vivido da para escribir un libro. ¿queréis un buen consejo? Si vais a Cuba guardar un día para pasarlo en este encantador e histórico lugar, ¡no os arrepentiréis!
